As the Los Angeles Times reports, each rider has to "stay aboard a bucking bull to score any points in a rodeo." A mounted rider will start the stopwatch when the bull leaves the chute, and if the rider lasts for eight seconds without being thrown off, they'll receive a score.
Officials will judge each ride on a scale from 0-100 points. NBC Sports explains that "both the rider and the bull are awarded points ... the bull [receives] from 0 to 50 points, and the rider from 0 to 50 points" for a total of 100 possible points.
The scoring system can vary slightly from event to event, but it generally follows this basic outline. Riders usually get three chances to ride a bull, and their highest score is used to determine their placement in the competition.
